Tip Of The Day: The Impact Of Verbal and Non Verbal Communication

THE IMPACT OF VERBAL AND NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION
In an important and extensive study about communication, Professor Mehrabian of the University of California studied three areas of human communication in order to establish both believability and trust. You may find the results of the communications project surprising.

  • The verbal, or the words you say, ranked 7% in importance.
  • The vocal, or how you sound when you say the words, ranked 38%.
  • The visual, or how you look when you say them, ranked the highest at 55%.

This means that over 80% of language is unspoken and that body language conveys literally volumes of important information. Becoming a more powerful speaker requires exploring effective communication, not just in the words you choose, but also in what you communicate with your posture, gestures, and tone of voice.
